WHAT: Community members in Montrose and LGBTQ+ advocates will protest the planned removal of the Pride crosswalk at Taft and Westheimer. This crosswalk, painted in Pride colors, is a symbol of Montrose’s LGBTQ+ history and serves as a safety feature. A young man was tragically killed at this intersection in the 2010s, and the crosswalk was installed to improve visibility.

Last week, METRO announced it would follow a state order to remove what it calls “political” crosswalks. This directive is a homophobic attack, coming shortly after a barrage of transphobic legislation. Protesters are calling on Mayor Whitmire to stand up for the LGBTQ+ community and protect the Pride crosswalk.

As the Houston Chronicle Editorial Board said, “Why can't our mayor be courageous, or at least clever, in standing up to the bureaucratic game of smear the queer?”

Other cities, like San Antonio, have refused to remove their Pride crosswalks. Houston must do the same.

The protest, "Don’t Mess with the Texas Rainbow," will include drag performers dressed as crosswalk guards leading the protest, music, signs, free water, snacks, and sunscreen. Over 100 people are expected to attend as well as the district council member and several candidates for public office.
